Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • This recipe only requires 3 simple ingredients.
  • And you only need 20 minutes to make it.
  • This Cardamom Syrup is a delicious way to add flavor to coffee or cocktails.
  • It has a spicy, floral flavor that is great in so many drinks.
  • And most importantly, it is absolutely delicious!

Ingredients

Small bowls on a linen surface filled with ingredients.

Whole Green Cardamom Pods: I like to use cardamom in the pods for this recipe. Cardamom can be tricky to find, at least it is in my area. So, I recommend ordering it online.

Brown Sugar: Brown sugar brings out the warmth in the cardamom.

White Sugar: White sugar balances the brown sugar, allowing the flavor of the cardamom to shine through.

Types of Cardamom

Green cardamom is the most common type of cardamom used in baking and drink recipes. It is citrusy, spicy, and floral.

Green cardamom comes in three ways: in its pod, whole seed, or ground seed. I like to use ground seeds for baking, but whole in the pod for recipes like this Cardamom Syrup.

Black cardamom is a relative of green cardamom but has a very smoky flavor. It is not typically used in baking.

Instructions

Ingredients in a pot.

Step 1. Combine brown sugar, granulated sugar, cardamom pods, and water in a 2-quart saucepan.

Place the pot over medium heat and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture comes to a full boil.

Step 2. Remove the mixture from the heat and place a lid on the pot. Allow the mixture to steep for 15 minutes.

Then, pour the mixture through a strainer to remove the cardamom pods.

Use immediately or store in the refrigerator.

Recipe FAQs

How should I store this Cardamom Syrup?

Pour the syrup into a container with an airtight lid and store in the refrigerator for up to 10 days.

What is cardamom syrup used for?

It is a delicious addition to all kinds of drinks from lattes, matcha, mocktails, and cocktails.

What does cardamom taste like?

Cardamom has a warm flavor that is similar to cinnamon and ginger, and also has floral and citrus notes.

Expert Recipe Tips

Allow the syrup to boil until all of the sugar granules dissolve. It should only take a minute or so.

And do not shortchange the steep time. It allows the cardamom to infuse its flavor into the syrup.
