Greek Village Salad, or Horiakiti Salad, is a traditional salad with cucumber, tomato, bell pepper, feta cheese and kalamata olives and no lettuce! It is dressed with a simple red wine vinaigrette and plenty of oregano for a simple and flavorful dish.

Two plates with Greek Village Salad on them topped with chunks of feta cheese.

I love how versatile salads are. They can be light and fresh like Tabouli, or more hearty like my Mediterranean Couscous Salad or Vegan Chickpea Tuna Salad. And they are quick and easy to make!

And the recipe I am sharing today is no exception. This Greek Village Salad, or Horiatiki Salad, is quick and easy, requires no cooking and is packed with Mediterranean flavors like olive oil, oregano and feta cheese. It is the perfect light lunch or side dish to any dinner!

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • This recipe requires simple, easy-to-find ingredients.
    • And it only takes 10 minutes to prepare!
    • This Greek Village Salad is crunchy, fresh and flavorful and contains no lettuce!
    • It requires no cooking, so it is perfect for the warmer months.
    • And most importantly, it is delicious on its own or as a side dish to any meal.

    Ingredients

Ingredients for this recipe on a linen cloth.

Cucumber: I recommend English cucumbers or Persian cucumbers for this recipe because you don't need to peel them or seed them

Red Wine Vinegar: I only recommend red wine vinegar for this recipe! Any brand will do.

Cherry Tomatoes: I love cherry tomatoes for this because they have the most flavor year-round. If you make this recipe during the Summer, when tomatoes are at their peak, feel free to use any variety!

Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Use a high quality extra virgin olive oil. Lately, my favorite has been Graza.

Oregano: Oregano is a hallmark flavor in Greek cuisine, so don't skip it!

Feta Cheese: I used Violife Feta Cheese. I like to use a block of feta to top each plate of Greek Village Salad individually with big chunks of cheese!

    Instructions

Vinaigrette in the bottom of a large white bowl.

Step 1. First, add extra virgin olive oil, red wine vinegar, grated garlic, dried oregano, salt and pepper. Stir to combine.

Cucumbers, tomatoes, sliced onion and olives added into the bowl with the dressing.

Step 2. Add halved cherry tomatoes, sliced English cucumber, chopped green bell pepper, sliced onion and kalamata olives to the bowl.

Toss everything together until the vegetables are coated in the dressing. Serve with a big piece of feta cheese on top!

    Recipe FAQs

How should I store this Greek Village Salad?

Transfer any leftover salad to a container with an airtight lid and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

What is the difference between Greek Salad and Horiatiki Salad?

Greek salad, especially in the United States, often has a base of lettuce. While traditional Horiatiki Salad contains no lettuce!

What vinegar is best for greek salad?

Red wine vinegar is the best vinegar for any greek salad dressing!

    Expert Recipe Tips

Be sure to grab a block of feta and not feta crumbles! It looks beautiful and keeps the salad rustic.

Be sure to use a large enough bowl to toss the salad together in!
