And this Vegan Strawberry Frosting recipe is my current favorite easy buttercream recipe! It is quick to make and uses freeze-dried strawberries for a fresh strawberry flavor that is consistent year-round. So, let's make it.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • This recipe only requires 6 ingredients.
  • And you only need 15 minutes to make it.
  • This Strawberry Frosting recipe is vegan and gluten-free, so anyone can enjoy it.
  • It utilizes freeze-dried strawberries for a fresh strawberry flavor that you can achieve year-round.
  • And most importantly, it is absolutely delicious!

Ingredients

Ingredients for this recipe in small bowls on a linen cloth.

Vegan Butter: Be sure to use a non-dairy butter that comes in a stick or block form. The types that come in a tub are too soft because they are formulated for spreading. I love Country Crock Plant Butter Sticks, but use your favorite.

Freeze-Dried Strawberries: You can typically find these near the dried fruit at your grocery store, but I usually order my freeze-dried strawberries online.

Lemon Juice: Lemon juice helps bring out the strawberry flavor.

Why Freeze-Dried Strawberries?

Freeze-fried strawberries retain the freshness in their flavor with no moisture!

So, we can really pack in that strawberry flavor without worrying about the frosting breaking.

Equipment

For this Vegan Strawberry Frosting recipe, you will need a food processor or a blender to grind the freeze-dried strawberries.

And a stand mixer with a paddle attachment or a hand mixer to mix the frosting.

Instructions

Ground freeze-dried strawberries in a food-processor.

Step 1. Place the freeze-dried strawberries into a food processor or a blender and grind them until they are a fine powder.

Sifted freeze-dried strawberries in a bowl.

Step 2. Sift the ground strawberries through a mesh strainer to remove any large pieces.

Creamed vegan butter in the bowl of a stand mixer.

Step 3. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the vegan butter until light and fluffy.

Step 4. Next, add powdered sugar and strawberry powder and mix on low until combined.

Then, add non-dairy milk, lemon juice, and vanilla and mix until light and fluffy.

Now, use your Vegan Strawberry Frosting as desired!

Uses

  • Pipe onto cupcakes like my Vegan Strawberry Cupcakes.
  • Or fill and frost a cake like my Chocolate Strawberry Cake.
  • Use it to fill sandwich cookies.

Recipe FAQs

How should I store this Vegan Strawberry Frosting?

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. To use, allow the frosting to sit at room temperature for one hour. Then, scoop the buttercream back into a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment to whip back up until soft.

Can I freeze buttercream?

Yes! Scoop the buttercream into an airtight container and store in the freezer for up to a month.
To defrost it, place the frozen frosting in the refrigerator the day before you plan to use it.
Then, pull from the fridge an hour before you plan to use it. Finally, scoop the buttercream into a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment to whip back up until soft and fluffy.

What milk is best for vegan frosting?

Any non-dairy milk works well for vegan frosting. I like to use oat milk because it is what I typically bake with, but coconut milk, soy milk, or even almond milk work well.

Is there a difference between confectioner's sugar and powdered sugar?

No! Confectioner's sugar and powdered sugar are the same thing.

Expert Recipe Tips

Be sure to use room temperature non-dairy butter, so it will become light and fluffy easily in the first step. If your butter is lumpy in the first step, your Vegan Strawberry Frosting will be lumpy in the end!

Don't forget to sift the ground strawberries. Sifting will remove any larger pieces and a few seeds, too!
