This Maple Old Fashioned cocktail recipe uses Blanton's bourbon and comes together in 5 just minutes! The maple syrup brings out the warm flavors in the bourbon and make this the perfect easy cocktail for Fall.
I love to cook and bake with bourbon. It has a warm, rich flavor that is absolutely delicious in recipes like Bourbon Caramel Apple Crisp, Bourbon Buttercream or even a simple Bourbon Maple Syrup. But, it's traditional use is in cocktails!
And this Maple Old Fashioned cocktail is a classic. It's a combination of whiskey, bitters, sweetener and an orange peel garnish. It is simple, timeless and delicious. And it's one of my favorites for two reasons. First, it only requires 4 ingredients. Second, it's made right in the glass you serve it in, so there are no extra dishes! So, let's make it!

Ingredients
Bourbon: I use Blanton's Original in this old fashioned cocktail recipe. But you can use any quality bourbon that you like. I also love Makers Mark Makers 46, Woodford Reserve and Four Roses Single Barrel.
Maple Syrup: Traditionally, Old Fashioned recipes call for sugar or simple syrup, but I love to use maple syrup. The maple really brings out the warm, rich flavor of the bourbon.
Angostura Bitters: Angostura Aromatic Bitters is a tincture of herbs and spices. Bitters are used in small amounts because they are potent. Two shakes is all you need.
Orange Peel: The orange peel garnish is tempting to skip, but don't. The peel has all of the orange essential oils in it and it imparts big flavor into the cocktail
Instructions
Step 1. In a rocks glass or an old fashioned glass, combine maple syrup and bitters. Stir with a bar spoon to combine.
Step 2. Then, add 3 large ice cubes and bourbon. Use a bar spoon to stir the cocktail for 1 minute.
Finally, twist the orange peel over the glass to express the oils, and add it to the glass.
Serve.
Recipe FAQs
I am. partial to Blanton's Original Bourbon. But, I also like Maker's Mark 46, Four Roses and Woodford Reserve.
While both cocktails contain Angostura bitters, a Manhattan contains Rye Whiskey and a bit of vermouth and is garnished with a Marachino cherry.
An Old Fashioned uses Bourbon Whiskey, sugar and an orange peel as a garnish.
Expert Recipe Tips
Do not use crushed ice, or small ice cubes if you can help it. Smaller ice melts faster and will dilute your Blanton's Maple Old Fashioned quickly.
And don't skip the stirring! The stirring will dilute the cocktail properly. If you skip it, the drink will not taste balanced.
