Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • This recipe is ready in 5 minutes!
  • And only requires 2 basic ingredients.
  • This Homemade Brown Sugar can be used in any recipe.
  • It tastes exactly like store-bought.
  • This is a quick and easy way to get yourself out of a baking pinch!

What is the Difference Between White and Brown Sugar?

They both start off the same way. They are both a made from either sugar cane or sugar beets. Their juice is boiled to remove the sugar crystals and that is white sugar. The byproduct of this process is called molasses.

To make brown sugar, some molasses is added back to the sugar crystals and mixed through.

So, the only difference betwen the two sugars, is molasses.

Ingredients

Ingredients for making this recipe in small bowls on a linen cloth.

Granulated Sugar: I used Domino Golden Sugar, but any plain old granulated sugar works.

Unsulphured Molasses: I love Grandmas Molasses. It is easy to find in any grocery store. Do not use blackstrap molasses for this recipe. It is too strong.

Special Equipment

I like to make this recipe using a hand mixer, or a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. But just a large bowl and rubber spatula works, too!

Instructions

White sugar and molasses in a large mixing bowl.

Step 1. In a large mixing bowl, combine granulated sugar and molasses.

A hand mixer in a large mixing bowl of homemade brown sugar.

Step 2. Mix using a hand mixer or in a stand mixer until the mixture is homogenous and looks like homemade light brown sugar.

And now, use as desired!

Uses

  • Use it in syrups like Brown Sugar Syrup
  • Or in any baking recipe you like such as Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookies or Vegan Oatmeal Cream Pies
  • Or add it to cocktails like my Bourbon Apple Cider Cocktail.

Recipe FAQs

How should I store this recipe?

Store in an airtight contanier in a cool, dark place, like your cupboard, for up to 2 months.

Can you make brown sugar without molasses?

No! Molasses is where the color and flavor come from.

Can I double this recipe?

Yes. This recipe is easily adjustable. Feel free to halve it, double it, triple it or even quadruple it!

Expert Recipe Tips

If you need homemade dark brown sugar, don't fear! I added notes in the recipe card for how to adjust the recipe.
