I think it is safe to say that everyone's favorite baking season is Autumn. There is something about baking the first Vegan Pumpkin Bread or the first batch of Pumpkin Oatmeal Cookies on a crisp day!

But today, it's all about the apple desserts. This Vegan Apple Crumble (or apple crisp) is warm and gooey with apples that are perfectly spiced and a cinnamon oat streusel. This is the perfect easy dessert for Fall. Especially for the people who prefer apple desserts to pumpkin!

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • This recipe uses simple, easy-to-find ingredients.
    • And it's so easy to make, so it's perfect for beginner bakers!
    • This Apple Crumble is dairy-free and vegan and can easily be made gluten-free.
    • It is warm, gooey, and well-spiced.
    • And most importantly, it's absolutely delicious!

    Ingredients

Ingredients needed for this recipe in small bowls on a linen cloth.

Granny Smith Apples: I used Granny Smith apples, but I also love to bake with Honeycrisp apples for recipes like Caramelized Apples and Vegan Apple Bread, and I think they would be great in this recipe.

Brown Sugar: Brown sugar pairs so well with warm spices!

Rolled Oats: I like the texture of Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats for this Vegan Apple Crumble, but you can also use quick oats.

All-Purpose Flour: To make this apple crisp gluten-free, substitute a 1:1 gluten-free all-purpose flour. My favorite brand is King Arthur.

Cornstarch: A little cornstarch thickens the juices released by apples during cooking.

Spices: The combination of cinnamon, ginger, and cloves makes this recipe so delicious!

    Instructions

Diced apples on a wooden cutting board.

Step 1. To make the Vegan Apple Crumble first, peel, core, and chop 1 ¾-2 pounds of Granny Smith apples into 1-inch pieces.

Apples combined with spices in a square pan.

Step 2. In a large bowl, combine chopped apples, brown sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves.

Then, use your hands to toss everything together until well combined.

Next, pour the apples into a greased 8x8 square pan.

Cinnamon streusel topping in a large mixing bowl.

Step 3. Then, in the same large bowl, combine rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon.

Now, add non-dairy butter and work the butter into the dry ingredients using your hands until the mixture is crumbly and no chunks of butter remain.

Apples topped with the crumble mixture in a square pan.

Step 4. Scatter the streusel evenly on top of the apple mixture, then bake the apple crisp in a 350°F oven for about 1 hour, or until the top is golden brown and the apple mixture is bubbling at the edges.

    Serve warm!

    Recipe FAQs

How should I store this Vegan Apple Crumble?

To store, wrap the leftover apple crisp tightly with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Warm the crisp back up in an oven or in a toaster oven.

What kind of apples are best for apple crumble?

I like Granny Smith because their tartness balances the crumble out. But I also love to bake with Honeycrisp apples.

Do you need to cook apples before making a crumble?

No! The baking time is enough to cook the apples through.

    Expert Recipe Tips

It can be hard to tell when the vegan apple crumble or crisp is done. Look for a golden brown top and bubbling sides. It should take about 1 hour.
