    • This recipe only requires 6 basic ingredients and 5 minutes to make.
    • And it's really easy, so it's great for beginners.
    • This Butter Bean Hummus is smooth, creamy and packed with flavor.
    • It's a delicious dip for veggies, pita or crackers and a perfect spread for sandwiches.
    • And most importantly, it's absolutely delicious!

    Ingredients

Ingredients for this recipe on a marble surface.

Canned Butter Beans: Butter beans are the "adult" version of lima beans! They are not grainy like lima beans. They are soft and blend super smooth and creamy. I like to use canned butter beans for ease.

Tahini: Tahini makes hummus like my Dill Pickle Hummus super smooth and creamy.

Fresh Lemon Juice: Use fresh lemon juice, here! I promise it makes a difference.

Garlic: A clove of fresh garlic adds so much flavor!

    Special Equipment

You will need a food processor for this recipe. I don't recommend using a blender.

My food processor is similar to this one by Kitchen Aid.

    Instructions

Butter beans, tahini, lemon juice, olive oil and garlic in a food processor.

Step 1. In a bowl of a food processor, combine butter beans, tahini, lemon juice, olive oil and grated garlic.

Hummus blended smooth in the bowl of a food processor.

Step 2. Process on high until smooth. Then, stop and use a spatula to scrape the sides of the bowl down. Add ¼ teaspoon of salt and process on high to mix it in. Now, taste the butter bean hummus and add additional salt if needed.

    Serve!

    What to Serve It With

    • Pita slices
    • A veggie platter
    • As a spread on a sandwich like my Chickpea Tuna Salad Sandwich
    • Tortilla chips

    Recipe FAQs

How should I store this Butter Bean Hummus?

Scoop the hummus into an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Are butter beans and lima beans the same thing?

Yes! Kind of. Lima beans are a younger version of the same bean. They are not interchangeable in recipes.

    What is tahini made of?

Tahini is sesame paste. Think peanut butter, but made of sesame seeds.

    Expert Recipes Tips

I have added a range of salt to this recipe, because everyone has different preferences. So, start with ¼ teaspoon and taste the hummus before adding more!

Be sure to grate the garlic with a microplane, or press it through a garlic press before adding it into the food processor.

Top your butter bean hummus with whatever you like. I used a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a pinch of sumac, but you could top it with fresh herbs, toasted pine nuts or even blistered cherry tomatoes!
